About me!

I’m Ashok Karan — a passionate photographer, traveler, and food blogger with over four decades of experience behind the lens. My journey in photography began in 1980 as a freelance photojournalist, with early works featured in esteemed publications like India Today, Dinman, and Dharmyug.

From 1986 to 2005, I worked with the Hindustan Times across its Patna and Ranchi editions, and later joined The Telegraph until 2007. I also served as Picture Editor at The Public Agenda in New Delhi. Over the years, I’ve documented some of the most powerful and defining moments across Bihar and Jharkhand — from political unrest and social movements to natural disasters —capturing stories that needed to be told.

Beyond journalism, my passion extends deeply into nature, wildlife, and culinary photography. This work has not only earned me several awards, particularly in the fields of wildlife and tourism, but also the immense joy of teaching photography
at institutions such as Patna Women’s College, Notre Dame Academy, and St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi.

Today, I continue to travel, explore, and share stories through my lens — whether it’s a remote landscape, a fleeting moment in the wild, or the rich culture found on a plate. I believe that every photograph has a story, and I remain committed to
inspiring others to discover the world through this powerful visual language.

Photography has earned me several awards, including recognition in wildlife and tourism photography, and given me the joy of teaching at renowned institutions like Patna Women’s College, Notre Dame Academy, and St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi. Today, I continue to explore the world, sharing my experiences as a traveller and food photographer, inspiring others, and believing that every photograph tells a story waiting to be discovered.
