While
walking through the bustling heart of the city today, I was greeted by the
cheerful calls of local women fruit vendors enthusiastically announcing the
arrival of the season’s freshest delight — Luscious Lychees!

This beloved
tropical fruit has finally hit the markets, and vendors are showcasing their
vibrant red clusters, still attached to leafy stems, priced at a steep ₹150 per
kilogram. However, once the leaves are accounted for, you’re getting closer to
750 grams — a reminder that freshness comes with a price, especially since
lychees are available only for a short time, typically around two weeks.

Lychee, also
spelled Litchi, is a sweet and juicy fruit with a subtly floral aroma.
Native to Southern China, it is now widely cultivated across tropical and
subtropical regions, especially in India, where Bihar and Jharkhand lead
the charge. Its eye-catching red spiky shell hides a translucent, juicy flesh
that is rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and essential nutrients. No
wonder it’s loved not just for taste but for its health benefits too!

Health
Benefits of Lychee:

  • Boosts immunity and aids
    digestion

  • Supports liver health

  • May help lower blood sugar and
    lipid levels

  • Low in calories and may support
    weight loss

  • Helps regulate blood pressure

India’s Muzaffarpur
region in Bihar
is particularly famous for producing the Sahi Lychee,
known for its sweetness, rich aroma, and juicy texture. This variety is even
exported to the UAE, UK, Canada, and Europe, bringing not only joy to
taste buds abroad but also significant foreign exchange.

Among the
top varieties in India are:

  • Sahi Lychee (Muzaffarpur, Bihar)

  • Swarn Roopa

  • Calcuttia

  • Tezpur Lychee (Assam)

  • Dehradun’s Seedless Lychee

  • Rose-Scented Lychee

Interestingly,
the soft pink hue inspired by the lychee’s flesh has found its way into the
world of fashion, featured in luxury accessories by brands like Louis
Vuitton
.

🍽️ Daily Consumption Tip:
Healthy adults can safely enjoy 10–12 lychees per day, while those with
diabetes should limit intake to 2–3. In India, it’s enjoyed fresh at the table,
while in China and Japan, it’s often dried or canned for extended enjoyment.

So if you’re
in the city, don’t miss your chance to savor this seasonal gem. Its heavenly
taste and fleeting presence make it one of the most awaited fruits of the year.
