Nature’s
Canvas – Netarhat
On my recent
journey to Netarhat, the “Queen of Chhotanagpur,” organized by the Jharkhand
Photographic Association (JPA), I had the privilege of visiting Magnolia
Point – renowned for its breathtaking sunset views.
After a
sumptuous lunch, we headed towards Magnolia Point, about 10 km from Netarhat in
the Latehar district. As luck would have it, dark clouds loomed overhead, and
soon, heavy rain lashed the area. We – a group of passionate photographers –
took shelter in small forest huts with canopies, hoping the weather would
clear. Our excitement dimmed for a while, as it seemed the sunset might remain
hidden behind thick clouds.
But nature
had other plans. Since we had arrived well in advance – nearly 90 minutes
before sunset – we waited patiently. Slowly, the rain eased, and just when hope
began to fade, the sky transformed into a spectacular canvas. Shades of red,
orange, and gold painted the horizon, creating a magical moment worth every
minute of patience. Cameras clicked away as we captured the enchanting sunset –
an experience etched in memory forever.
Magnolia
Point – A Blend of Beauty and Legend
Magnolia
Point is not only famous for its mesmerizing views but also for its serene
atmosphere and gentle breeze. Surrounded by lush green hills and valleys, it is
a paradise for nature lovers and photographers alike.
The place
also carries a poignant tale. It is believed to be named after a British
officer’s daughter, Magnolia, who ended her life here after a tragic
heartbreak. According to local lore, Magnolia and Surya (Batuk) pledged their
love beneath the trees of Netarhat, but fate had other plans. After Surya’s
untimely death, Magnolia, overcome with grief, leapt off the cliff with her
horse. A statue at the viewpoint stands as a reminder of this legend.
Beyond
Magnolia Point – Exploring Netarhat
Netarhat is
famed for its hills, dense forests, and waterfalls. Among them, Lodh
Waterfall, the highest in Jharkhand and the 21st highest in India, is a
must-visit. Located about 70 km from Netarhat, it is nestled deep within the
Sal forests.
The best
time to visit is from October to March, when the skies are clear, the
weather is pleasant, and nature’s beauty is at its peak. Whether it’s watching
magical sunrises and sunsets, trekking through serene landscapes, or simply
relaxing amid tranquil forests, Netarhat promises a rejuvenating experience.
