The Unsung Backbone of Kolkata’s Bustling Markets: The

Plight of the Muthias #Barabazaar #Kolkata #MigrantWorkers

Kolkata’s
vibrant Bara Bazaar, a labyrinthine maze of wholesale goods, pulsates with the
energy of commerce. From towering stacks of garments to gleaming steel and
overflowing sacks of tea, it’s a shopper’s paradise. But beneath the bustling
surface lies a hidden story – the story of the Muthias.

These migrant
laborers, primarily from Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha, are the backbone of this
massive market. They come seeking opportunity, only to find themselves caught
in a cycle of exploitation.

Toiling Under the
Sun

Thousands of
Muthias, many illiterate and living in poverty, form the crucial labor force in
this unorganized sector. They work tirelessly as head loaders, ferrying heavy
goods on their backs all day. Their days are long, with minimal breaks and harsh
working conditions.

A Life of
Hardship

Finding proper
rest and sustenance is a constant struggle for the Muthias. They sleep on
sidewalks, parks, or railway platforms, with little regard for their health and
well-being. Many lack proper clothing, footwear, and access to basic amenities
like healthcare and insurance.

A Glimpse into
Their Reality

Imagine a
worker dragging a heavy load under the scorching sun, taking a quick
“bath” under a roadside tap, or simply trying to snatch some rest on
a cart. These are the stark realities captured by photographer Ashok Karan.

A Call for
Change

While
government initiatives offer a glimmer of hope, a lot needs to be done. We need
to ensure fair wages, access to healthcare, and decent living conditions for
these essential workers.

Let’s Share
Their Story

By sharing
Ashok Karan’s photos and this story, we can raise awareness about the struggles
of the Muthias. Let’s advocate for their well-being and ensure they are not
just seen as invisible cogs in the economic machinery, but as valued
contributors deserving of a dignified life.
