After a long
gap, my craving for a hearty meal of mutton and rice took over. When I
expressed my wish to my better half, she flatly refused, citing reasons tied to
the day’s traditions. However, my heart was set on this delicious dish. Sensing
my longing, she suggested I try a restaurant instead. Instantly, India Hotel
came to mind—a renowned establishment known for its exquisite non-vegetarian
meals served in a clean and welcoming atmosphere. And so, my quest for a
fulfilling lunch began!
A Taste of Tradition
Situated on the
bustling Main Road of Ranchi, near Iqra Masjid crossing, India Hotel has
carved a niche for itself in the city’s culinary scene. Its signature meal—hot,
perfectly boiled rice paired with succulent mutton cooked in a charcoal oven
with freshly ground homemade spices—is nothing short of heavenly. My love
affair with this restaurant dates back to my early days in Ranchi when a friend
first introduced me to this gem. Since then, it has been my go-to spot for
indulgence.
Even during my
office days, I would often visit India Hotel with colleagues for lunch,
relishing their signature dishes. On several occasions, we hosted parties,
placing large orders that were delivered with care and courtesy. Whenever my
brother or friends visit Ranchi, a meal at India Hotel is a must on our
itinerary!
A Bengali Culinary Touch
Being a
Bengali-owned establishment, the menu carries a delightful touch of West
Bengal’s culinary heritage. Besides mutton, the restaurant offers an array of
fish dishes such as Cherapuna, Pabda, Bhetki, Malai Chingri, Rohu, and
Katla—each cooked to perfection with mustard and ginger paste. The Malai
Chingri, in particular, is a showstopper, perfectly paired with hot steamed
rice. Given its popularity, the restaurant is packed during lunchtime, with
eager patrons often waiting in queue for 20-30 minutes. Office-goers, families,
and bank employees make up the majority of its clientele.
The Legacy of India Hotel
The story of India
Hotel is one of passion and perseverance. Established in 1964 by Milon
Brahma and his wife Gauri Brahma in a 1937-built structure, the restaurant
started with modest means but flourished due to the couple’s sheer dedication.
Today, it stands as a culinary landmark, serving 350-400 customers daily. The
restaurant also offers home delivery and takeaway services, boasting a loyal
customer base that returns time and again for its delectable meals.
Challenges and Triumphs
While the
restaurant enjoys unwavering patronage, sales dip during the months of Shrawan,
Chhath, and Laxmi Puja, as many Hindus abstain from non-vegetarian food.
Similarly, Tuesdays and Thursdays witness a decline in footfall. However,
patrons from other communities continue to frequent the restaurant, ensuring
steady business.
From its humble
beginnings with a small team, India Hotel now employs around 40 staff
members. Interestingly, despite its massive popularity, it has no branches in
Ranchi or elsewhere in India—making the experience of dining here truly unique.
The restaurant is open from 10 AM to 9 PM, daily.
